Our verdict

eToro combines CFDs on forex, indices and commodities with real shares, ETFs and crypto, and is known for CopyTrader. Its European entity is regulated by CySEC and the parent company is listed on Nasdaq. Less suitable if you want MetaTrader or mainly care about forex costs.

Regulation and safety

EU clients trade with eToro (Europe) Ltd in Limassol, licensed by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC, licence 109/10) and passported across the EEA. Since 2025 eToro Europe has also held a MiCA licence for crypto. Following positions taken by local regulators, eToro no longer offers CFDs to new clients in Spain and Belgium.

Client money is held separately and retail clients have negative balance protection. The Cypriot Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) covers up to €20,000 per client, though not for crypto. The parent company eToro Group has been listed on Nasdaq since May 2025 and publishes annual reports. In 2023 eToro Europe was fined €1.3 million in Italy for misleading "zero commission" advertising.

Costs

On forex eToro charges no separate commission, but a percentage of the position value on top of the market price: 0.005% per trade on EUR/USD, which eToro describes as the lowest possible scenario. Independent comparisons put the typical EUR/USD spread at about 1 pip. That is average, not tight.

Account fees matter most at eToro:

  • With a euro account through eToro Money you deposit and withdraw without conversion or withdrawal fees.
  • If you use the dollar account, depositing euros costs 150 pips in conversion and each withdrawal costs US$5.
  • Real shares cost US$1 per trade; ETFs are commission-free.
  • There is no longer an inactivity fee.

Platform and range

eToro uses its own web platform and apps. Its signature feature is CopyTrader: you automatically copy other investors' positions, from US$200 per investor. Experienced traders can use eToro Edge, a more advanced browser-based trading desk, and there is a public API. MetaTrader and cTrader are not available; charts are powered by TradingView, but you cannot trade from TradingView itself.

The range covers more than 7,000 instruments: CFDs on forex, indices, commodities, shares and crypto, plus real shares, ETFs and crypto. The minimum first deposit varies by country.

Education and support

The free demo account comes with US$100,000 in virtual funds. The eToro Academy offers courses, podcasts and webinars. Support runs through live chat and the help centre, 24 hours a day, six days a week, in several languages including English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

Who is eToro for?

eToro suits people who want to combine investing in shares and ETFs with occasional trading, or who want to learn by following experienced investors. Note that with CopyTrader you carry the full risk of the positions you copy. Active forex traders looking for MetaTrader or the lowest spreads will find better terms elsewhere.
