Regulation and safety

European clients open an account with AVA Trade EU Ltd in Dublin, licensed by the Central Bank of Ireland (reference C53877, since 2009) and passported across the EEA, with the exception of Croatia. The AvaTrade group also has entities outside the EU, so check that you are joining AVA Trade EU Ltd when you open an account.

Client money is held in segregated accounts, and the arrangements are audited by an external firm every six months. Retail clients have negative balance protection on forex, CFDs and options. The Irish compensation scheme ICCL covers 90% of your loss up to €20,000 if the broker fails. AvaTrade is not publicly listed. In 2017 AvaTrade reached a settlement with the Belgian regulator FSMA; its products are not intended for Belgian consumers.

Costs

AvaTrade charges no commission on forex and CFDs. The cost is in the spread, from 0.9 pips on EUR/USD. Independent measurements put the average at about 0.9 pips, which is tight for a commission-free account.

Two important caveats:

  • Inactivity fees: €50 per three months without activity, plus a €100 administration fee per year without activity. If you trade only occasionally, these add up quickly.
  • Affiliate clause: under section 17.4 of its terms, AvaTrade may widen spreads for clients referred by a third party such as an affiliate. ForexPlatform may be such an affiliate. Always compare the spread in the platform with the spreads published on AvaTrade's website.

Deposits and withdrawals by card or bank transfer are free; e-wallets such as PayPal and Skrill are not available to EU clients.

Platform and range

You choose between MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, the web trader and the AvaTrade app. AvaOptions lets you trade vanilla FX options, and DupliTrade and AvaSocial let you copy other traders. AvaProtect is a paid add-on that temporarily protects a position against losses. cTrader and a TradingView integration for CFDs are not available.

The range covers more than 1,250 instruments: CFDs on forex, shares, indices, commodities, ETFs, bonds and crypto.

Education and support

The free demo account comes with up to US$100,000 in virtual funds. AvaAcademy offers courses, videos and webinars, and Trading Central provides technical analysis. Support is available 24 hours a day on weekdays via chat, WhatsApp, email and phone, in 15 languages.

Who is AvaTrade for?

AvaTrade suits active traders who want MetaTrader and value Irish supervision and phone support. Beginners who trade only now and then will feel the inactivity fees.
